Glen Grant Distillery

It was founded in 1840 by brothers John and James Grant in Rothes, Morayshire, in the Speyside whisky region. In 1872, however, the most famous of the Grant lineage takes over the helm of the distillery: James, his father's namesake, was the typical Victorian gentleman, including tweed robes and long walrus mustache, known above all by the nickname “Major”, “the major”. James was the first to introduce in the distillery the tall and slender stills with attached to their top the special purifiers, still in use today, with the intention of producing a fruity and crystalline whiskey. In 1894, to meet the great demand for whiskey, the major had a second distillery built on the opposite side of the road called simply Glen Grant No. 2, which closed after only 5 years due to the Great Recession that hit the whiskey industry at the end of the 19th century. In the early twentieth century Glen Grant was one of the first single malts to be available throughout Scotland. In 1972, with the birth of The Glenlivet Distillers ltd, a company that saw the merger of three distilleries, Glen Grant, Glenlivet and Longmorn, a real boom in sales took place. The distillery expands with 2 new stills, which are added to the four already present to which, in 1977, four more are added to bring its number to 10. Also in 1977 Glen Grant was bought by Chivas Brothers controlled by Seagrams ltd and in 2001 the Chivas Brothers Group came under the control of Pernod Ricard. Finally, almost to cement the relationship with Italy, where it remains the best-selling whiskey, the Campari Group finally bought Glen Grant in 2006 with an investment of 115 million euros.
