Amaro Montenegro is an Italian bitter first produced in 1885. The creator of amaro was Stanislao Cobianchi, a bolognese nobleman predestined by the family to the ecclesiastical career. To escape his fate Stanislaus fled Bologna by traveling the world. During his stay in the Principality of Montenegro he was struck by the digestive properties of a drink called Karik. Returning to Italy he worked in a Piedmontese liquor store where, having learned the trade, he managed to reproduce the recipe of the Montenegrin drink. Back in Bologna he first opened a small liquor shop and later a distillery for the production of bitter Montenegro. The drink was much appreciated, to the point that Gabriele D'annunzio called it liqueur of the virtues.
