Born in 1894 to an ancient family of sake producers, Masataka Taketsuru is considered the father of Japanese whiskey. After completing chemical studies, he found work in an Osaka firm, Settsu Shuzo, which cultivated the dream of producing a Japanese whiskey. In 1919 he was sent to Scotland to acquire the necessary technical baggage; here he became passionate about the world of distillates, and developed the dream of creating a malt distillery in Japan. In 1934, he decided to continue on his own: he created the Nippo kaju company and undertook the construction of the Yoichi distillery on the island of Hokkaido. In 1952 the company took the definitive name of Nikka Whiskey. The success was such as to allow the installation of a second distillery, in 1969, on the island of Honsu. Today Nikka is widely recognized as one of the best distilleries producing whiskey not only in Japan, but all over the world.
