DESCRIPTION: This is one of Italy's most interesting and typical luxury wines. The old spelling of the name itself was Vermuth (or Wermouth) . The origin of this name is not certain; it is generally traced back to the German Wermuth "wormwood" (Artemisia absinthium). It is believed that such a wine was already prepared in ancient times by the Romans, under the name Absinthiatum vinum. It is a fact, however, that its fame originated in Piedmont thanks to Antonio Benedetto Carpano who first made and "launched" it in Turin in 1786. Vermouth is made from white wine-Moscato from Piedmont and some rich wines from southern Italy-and characterized in flavor and aroma by an infusion of carefully selected mountain herbs.
