Bright red and very tasty, the Pomodorino del Piennolo del Vesuvio is one of the oldest and most typical products of Campania's agriculture, so much so that it is even represented in the scene of the traditional Neapolitan nativity scene. These distinctive and tasty cherry tomatoes (also called "spongillo" or "PIZZUTELLO" because of the lace present at its end) group together old local cultivars and biotypes, the selection of which has been taken care of over the decades by the farmers themselves. The names of these ecotypes are the popular ones given by the local producers themselves, such as "Fiaschella," "Lampadina," "Patanara," "Principe Borghese," and "Re Umberto," traditionally grown for centuries in the same area of origin. The typical area of production and preservation of pomodorino del piennolo coincides with the entire extent of the Somma-Vesuvius volcanic complex, including its slopes sloping down to almost sea level. Their deep red color, hard skin that retains all nutrients even over the long term, and fresh, acrid flavor make these cherry tomatoes unique in the world and impossible to grow elsewhere. One story even says that the red color is due to tiny drops of Vesuvius' lava that, by nourishing the vegetable, give it life and resilience.
