Giagiù pomodorino pizzutello or del Piennolo del Vesuvio is an ecotype of a bright golden yellow tomato found in the Vesuvius area (slopes of Vesuvius). The rediscovery of this ecotype has become almost legendary. Apparently it all happened by chance when during the harvesting of red piennolo a farmer, called Giulia's grandfather, noticed that one of the plants had golden yellow fruit. And so this variety was named GiaGiù that is, Giulia's yellow. Having collected the seeds, thanks in part to a research project of the Faculty of Agriculture in Portici, by now cultivation has resumed and spread widely. The name "Pomodorino Giallo del Vesuvio" belongs to the Giagiù variety and has been included by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry in the list of Traditional Food Products (PAT). It is an indeterminate-growing plant therefore needs supports (braces), so all cultivation operations are manual (from harvesting to field transplanting to fruit picking). Rich in vitamins and antioxidants the Distinguishing Note of this ecotype is the sour flavor well harmonized with the underlying sweetness that releases a lingering tomato aroma. It is also particularly rich in beta-carotene, which aids proper tissue growth and repair. It is ideal in the preparation of fish-based first courses and a main ingredient on pizza
