The year 1900 represents a milestone in the history of the wine economy of Caldaro: 70 Winegrowers of the territory join in the “Erste Kellereigenossenschaft Kaltern” the first social Winery of Caldaro, in fact. Their goal is to deal directly with the vinification of their grapes and the marketing of their wines. Also in the same year, construction work began on the building of great architectural historical interest that will rise in the immediate vicinity of the Transat electric railway station. In 1925 a further important step followed, consisting in the establishment of the new social winery, called “Neue Kellereigenossenschaft”. The headquarters of the latter is also located near the station. Erste+Neue originated from the merger of the two cooperatives. Today there are 400 proud winemakers who each year give their own harvest. The terraces on which the members farmers masterfully work their vineyards lie in the picturesque landscape that surrounds Lake Caldaro and that rises to the plateau located at the foot of the Mendola. The total area cultivated with vines extends for about 230 hectares and is distributed over various specific areas that give rise to qualities with the name not infrequently high-sounding. The grapes coming from these crus and from the best areas of the territory are reserved a distinct treatment that allows to obtain those top wines, able to excite the experts. Thanks to the experience gained by several generations thanks to an innate instinct to experiment, Erste+Neue works today with excellent wine varieties from which it derives its famous wines. These include the native South Tyrolean species Gewürztraminer and Lagrein, the Schiava as well as the internationally renowned qualities such as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet and Merlot. The elegant Pinot Blanc and the fruity Sauvignon are also particularly appreciated.
