THE PRODUCER: Conti Formentini, founded in 1520 in San Floriano, Friuli, is one of the oldest wineries in Collio Goriziano, a narrow and privileged hilly area located between the Isonzo and Juudrio rivers on the border with Slovenia. For nearly five centuries, the wines of the Formentoni Counts have been part of Friuli's wine-making tradition. The origins of the Formentini lineage are lost in legend. Starting in the late 1200s, all sources agree in providing the same information: in fact, the first to bear the current surname was Simon de Versa known as Formentino, who lived in Cividale at Porta Broxana. The Formentini family, whose name seems somehow related to "furmint," the basic grape variety of the famous Hungarian Tokay, of probable Friulian origin, have inhabited since the 16th century the castle built on top of a high hill, defending the village of San Floriano.
